Sarah Longshaw: Assistant Case Manager

We wanted to share an overview of Sarah’s professional journey and personal insights, highlighting her contributions and experiences working at AKA Case Management. She recently transitioned from a part-time Assistant Case Manager to a full-time Assistant Case Manager and has taken on many more responsibilities since.

Background and Career

Sarah started in care in 2006 and worked with a different company before joining us in 2015. She has extensive experience in the care sector, working with clients with various disabilities and challenging behaviours such as ADHD and autism.

She became a full-time team leader in 2016, managing a significant 24-hour care package. In 2021, she transitioned to a part-time Assistant Case Manager role, becoming full-time in January 2024.

Current Role

Sarah told us her role is very varied and includes:

  • Dealing with settled cases and clients who have completed litigation and have established care packages.
  • Working closely with law firms, participating in Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings and therapy meetings.
  • Since January, she has started working with new clients from the beginning, addressing recent injuries, and setting up therapy and support systems for them.

Passion for Her Work

Sarah enjoys keeping up-to-date with new developments in case management and litigation processes. She finds the process of overcoming initial challenges and achieving success in new tasks fulfilling.

Her new role offers her plenty of opportunities for continuous learning and variety. She attends conferences when she can. She recently attended the Switalskis conference in York and the BABICM Annual Conference. She enjoys the learning opportunities and the networking.

Sarah is very interested in learning more about motivational interviewing techniques. She is looking for webinars to help her understand how to use these techniques to help her clients. Motivational interviewing helps Sarah work with challenging clients by helping them reach their own conclusions. The goal is to encourage clients to think about ideas independently, fostering a sense of ownership.

Sarah told us what she loves best about her new role is:

  • The diversity of her daily tasks ranges from helping clients find a new home and ensuring it is accessible for them to assisting them in shopping for furniture.
  • She finds satisfaction in being part of her clients’ lives and assisting them in significant transitions and personal milestones.

Social and Work Environment

Sarah told us that she appreciates the support that AKA Case Management provides and the opportunities for career progression. Her colleagues, especially Elaine Ricketts and Catherine Watkins in the West Midlands, have been fabulous in helping her to organise her time better and ensure she has all the information she needs for her new role.

Overall, the workplace environment at AKA Case Management is very supportive, and the organisation organises regular meetings and events to connect with peers. This is particularly important when working remotely most of the time. It can be very isolating at times, but Elaine checks in with her regularly, and there are many opportunities to meet with other team members from different regions.

She wants to better balance her professional and personal life and is looking forward to moving to a four-day workweek to spend more time with her family.

Personal Life and Interests

Sarah has two children: a 19-year-old son and a 9-year-old daughter. She enjoys social activities and visiting theme parks in the UK and abroad with her family. Quality time spent with her family on weekends is essential, and she hopes to have more of this time during a four-day working week.

Sarah’s dedication to her role and clients and her continuous pursuit of learning and improvement make her a valuable and passionate team member. We are so proud that she has moved into the full-time Assistant Case Manager role and very happy she is loving it.
